The first round out of the eleven slated this season for the A1GP series is
now out of the way with South Africa in a dominate lead over the other 21
nations. In A1GP, wins and points do not go to drivers and manufacturers,
instead they are rewarded to the nations the teams represent. A world cup
approach to formula racing, cars and team budgets are equal and any country
had the chance to win.
All the pre-season testing, team preparation and rule changes that lead up
to this weekend were finally tested and proven in the two races held at
Zandvoort located in the Netherlands. The first race was a short sprint
race, just enough laps to warm the cars up for the longer feature coming at
them later in the day. Unlike last year the sprint races this season will
have no effect on the features unless a team's car is not able to be
repaired in time. Only qualifying sessions held on Saturday dictate the
grids on Sunday. For this weekend Adrian Zaugg held the honors of winning
both poles in the wet. Today's races were dry and mild, so who had the best
car could have possible changed.
